What is CGPA to percentage conversion?
CGPA to percentage conversion turns a cumulative grade point average on a 10-point scale into an approximate percentage of marks. It's mostly needed in India and other countries using 10-point grading, when a job form, scholarship or foreign university asks for a percentage. The result is an indicative figure based on your institution's chosen multiplier.
This calculator multiplies your CGPA by a factor you can change. It defaults to 9.5, the convention used by India's Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The formula
Percentage = CGPA × multiplier
With the CBSE default: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
CBSE introduced this under its Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme for Class X, where marksheets showed grades and a CGPA instead of marks. To let students state a percentage, CBSE defined the indicative percentage as 9.5 × CGPA, and a subject's indicative percentage as 9.5 × that subject's grade point.
The 9.5 comes from CBSE's own results: students in the A1 band (91 to 100 marks, 10 grade points) averaged about 95 marks, and 95 ÷ 10 = 9.5. That's why the factor is approximate. It assumes your marks sat near the average for each grade band.
Worked example
A CGPA of 8.4 with the default multiplier:
- Multiply: 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8
- The calculator shows 79.80%, rounded to two decimal places.
The same CGPA with a multiplier of 10 would give 84.00%. The 4.2-point gap is why it matters to use your own institution's factor.

Other conversion rules
The 9.5 factor is a CBSE convention. Universities and other boards set their own rules, and some use a formula rather than a straight multiplier, such as subtracting a constant before multiplying. A straight multiplier can't represent those formulas, so for them, calculate by hand from your university's published rule.
Before converting:
- Check your marksheet, transcript or university regulations for an official conversion rule.
- If one exists and it's a single multiplier, enter it in the calculator.
- If it's a different kind of formula, apply it yourself and keep a copy of the rule to show whoever asked for the percentage.
- If there's no rule at all, the CBSE factor is a common fallback, but say which factor you used.
How to use the calculator
- Enter your CGPA, between 0 and 10.
- Keep the multiplier at 9.5, or change it to your institution's factor (the field accepts 1 to 20).
- Read the equivalent percentage. Results above 100% are capped at 100%.
Limits
- It handles 10-point scales only. CGPAs on 4-point or 5-point scales need a different conversion.
- The result is indicative. If an employer or university needs an exact percentage, they'll often accept only the figure or rule issued by your institution.
- CBSE moved away from the CGPA-only marksheet for Class X in later years. The 9.5 rule applies to results issued under the CCE grading scheme.
