What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used in design and publishing to fill a layout before the real copy exists. It looks like ordinary prose at a glance, with words of varying length and normal sentence breaks, but it's unreadable on purpose, so people reviewing a mockup look at the layout and typography instead of reading the words.
The text comes from a Latin passage by Cicero. In Book 1 of De finibus bonorum et malorum there's a line beginning "neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit", which is where "dolor sit amet", "consectetur" and "adipisci" come from. The familiar "Lorem ipsum" version chops and rearranges those words, so it isn't grammatical Latin.
How to generate placeholder text
- Type how many paragraphs you need into the box, for example
5. Leave it empty for 3. - Click Generate.
- Click Copy and paste the text into your design tool, HTML template or CMS.
The input is read as a whole number, so 2.9 gives 2 paragraphs and 7 paragraphs gives 7. The result is clamped to between 1 and 50: 99 gives 50, and a negative number gives 1. One quirk to know: 0 doesn't produce an empty result; it falls back to the default of 3.
How the text is built
This generator doesn't copy a fixed block of Lorem Ipsum. It assembles new text every time from a 69-word list (63 distinct words) taken from the standard passage:

Because words are drawn at random, the same word can appear twice in a row, and the sentences won't match any published Lorem Ipsum text. Here's a real one-paragraph result:

Ea occaecat nisi dolor esse cillum voluptate nisi anim amet anim tempor ut. Anim magna aliquip anim ipsum laborum voluptate laboris minim do voluptate esse veniam.
In test runs, 3 paragraphs came to between about 130 and 170 words, and 50 paragraphs to around 2,700. Paste the result into the word counter if you need an exact figure, for example to match a 300-word article slot.
When to use placeholder text, and when not to
Lorem Ipsum works well for checking line length, font size, column widths and how a card or article template copes with a few paragraphs of text. It's quick and doesn't distract reviewers.
It's less useful when the content itself shapes the design:
- Headings and buttons. Real labels vary a lot in length, and "Lorem ipsum" won't tell you that a translated button wraps onto two lines. Use realistic copy for these.
- Languages other than English. German compound words, or scripts like Arabic and Japanese, behave very differently from short Latin words.
- Accessibility reviews. Screen readers will read placeholder text aloud as gibberish. Make sure none of it ships to production, and search your templates for "lorem" before launch.
Pair it with other placeholders
