What Can You Do With Bash?
Knowing what Bash is used for makes it easier to stay motivated while learning the basics:
- File management — organize, rename, back up, and clean up files in bulk.
- Text processing — search logs, extract columns from CSV files, count and rank values, find and replace across many files.
- Automation scripts — set up a new computer, create project skeletons, run a sequence of build steps.
- Server administration — check disk space, restart services, rotate logs, monitor processes.
- Deployment and CI/CD — build, test, and deploy applications automatically.
- Scheduled jobs — run tasks every night or every hour with
cron. - Gluing tools together — call APIs with
curl, process JSON withjq, and pass results between programs.
You'll build smaller versions of several of these in the project lessons at the end of each level.
