Installing F#
F# comes with the .NET SDK — install the SDK and you have the F# compiler, F# Interactive, and project templates. Choose the current LTS (long-term support) release, .NET 10, from dotnet.microsoft.com/download, or use a package manager:
Windows
winget install Microsoft.DotNet.SDK.10
macOS
brew install --cask dotnet-sdk
Linux
sudo apt install dotnet-sdk-10.0 # Ubuntu
sudo dnf install dotnet-sdk-10.0 # Fedora
On other distributions, Microsoft's dotnet-install script installs the
SDK into your home folder.
Check it works
$ dotnet --version
10.0.401
Your version number may be newer. Any .NET 8 or later SDK runs almost every example in this course; F# 10 features need the .NET 10 SDK.
Try it without installing
Try F# online (linked from fsharp.org) runs F# in the browser — handy for trying the smaller examples in this course.
