What Can You Do With Groovy?
Knowing where Groovy is used makes it easier to stay motivated while learning the basics:
- Write build logic — Gradle build scripts, custom tasks, and plugins.
- Automate delivery — Jenkins declarative and scripted pipelines, shared libraries, and job DSLs.
- Test Java code — Spock specifications with data tables, mocks, and readable failure messages.
- Script everyday chores — process files, call REST APIs, transform JSON and XML, query databases, and run shell commands.
- Build DSLs — configuration languages and mini-languages that read almost like English (Gradle itself is an example).
- Extend applications — many Java applications (Jenkins, SoapUI, Atlassian tools, Elasticsearch in the past, ImageJ, Ghidra) embed Groovy as their scripting language.
- Build web apps — Grails, a full-stack framework inspired by Ruby on Rails, and Micronaut services.
You'll build smaller versions of several of these in the project lessons at the end of each level.
