Why Learn Ruby?
Practical reasons Ruby is worth learning:
- Ruby on Rails — one of the most productive web frameworks ever built. GitHub, Shopify, Basecamp, and many startups run on Rails, and most Ruby jobs involve it.
- Readable code — Ruby's syntax is designed to be pleasant to read and write, which makes it a gentle first language.
- Automation and scripting — Ruby is excellent for small tools that process text, move files, or call APIs.
- Developer tooling — widely-used tools such as Homebrew (the macOS package manager), CocoaPods, and Fastlane are written in Ruby.
- A strong testing culture — the Ruby community pioneered many testing practices, and learning Ruby means learning them too.
Trade-offs worth knowing up front: Ruby is slower than compiled languages such as Go or Rust for CPU-heavy work, and it is used far less for data science and machine learning than Python. Where Ruby shines is building web applications and tools quickly with clear, maintainable code.
