Why Learn C?

Three practical reasons C is still worth learning directly, even in 2026:

  • It explains how computers actually work — memory addresses, the stack vs. the heap, and how a "variable" is really just a named location in memory, in a way higher-level languages deliberately hide from you.
  • Systems and embedded programming — operating systems, device drivers, and microcontroller firmware are overwhelmingly written in C, where every byte of memory and every CPU cycle can matter.
  • It makes every language after it easier — C++, Rust, Go, and even Python's own C extensions all assume the mental model this course builds.

C trades away safety nets other languages provide (bounds checking, automatic memory management) for total control — this course treats that trade-off honestly rather than glossing over it.
