Why Learn Swift?
Practical reasons Swift is worth learning:
- Apple apps — Swift is the language for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro apps. If you want to publish on the App Store, Swift is where you start.
- SwiftUI — Apple's modern UI framework lets you build interfaces with a small amount of readable code, and preview them live as you type.
- A good first compiled language — Swift's syntax is clean and its compiler explains mistakes clearly, which makes it a gentle introduction to type-safe programming.
- Transferable ideas — optionals, value types, protocols, and structured concurrency appear in Kotlin, Rust, and TypeScript too.
Trade-offs worth knowing up front: most Swift jobs are Apple-platform jobs, and building iOS apps requires a Mac with Xcode. Swift on Linux and Windows works well for command-line tools and servers, but its ecosystem there is much smaller than for languages like Go or Python. You can learn the language itself — everything in Level 1 and Level 2 — on any operating system.
