Installing Dart
There are two ways to get Dart. Choose based on what you want to build.
Option 1: Install Flutter (includes Dart)
If you plan to build apps, install the Flutter SDK from
docs.flutter.dev — it includes the Dart SDK. Follow the instructions
for your operating system, then run flutter doctor to check your
setup.
Option 2: Install just the Dart SDK
For learning the language and writing command-line programs, the Dart SDK alone is enough (see dart.dev/get-dart):
- Windows —
choco install dart-sdk, or download the SDK zip, extract it, and add itsbinfolder to yourPATH. - macOS —
brew tap dart-lang/dartthenbrew install dart. - Linux — follow the
aptinstructions on dart.dev, or download the zip.
Check the installation
Open a new terminal and run:
dart --version
Dart SDK version: 3.13.4 (stable) (Tue Sep 15 01:01:15 2026 -0700) on "windows_x64"
The version and platform will match what you installed. If the terminal
says dart: command not found (or "is not recognized" on Windows),
close and reopen it; if it still fails, the SDK's bin folder isn't on
your PATH.
No installation at all
DartPad at dartpad.dev runs Dart — and even small Flutter apps — in your browser. It's perfect for trying the examples in these lessons.
