Beginner Projects
Prerequisites: Level 1 — Beginner
Practice with the sample database from the "Our Sample Database" lesson, or build your own. Each project is a set of questions to answer with a single query each.
1. Store Report
Write queries that answer: How many customers are there in each city? Which products cost more than the average price? What are the three most expensive products? How many orders are there of each status?
2. Personal Library
Create a books table (title, author, year, genre, pages, rating). Insert
at least 15 books you've read or want to read, then query: books per genre,
the longest book, average rating per author, and books published before
2000, sorted by year.
3. Expense Log
Create an expenses table (date, category, description, amount). Add a
month of expenses — the Random CSV Generator
can help create sample data — then total spending per category, find your
biggest single expense, and list days where you spent more than a limit you
choose.
4. Data Cleaning Checks
On any table, write "quality check" queries: rows with missing values in important columns, duplicate emails, prices of zero or less, and dates in the future. Real analysts run checks like these before trusting data.
