Why Learn SQL?

Practical reasons SQL is worth learning:

  • It's everywhere — almost every website, app, bank, hospital, and business system stores its data in a relational database.
  • It's useful in many jobs — back-end developers, data analysts, data scientists, product managers, and marketers all use SQL to get answers from data.
  • It lasts — SQL has been the standard for decades, and what you learn now will still apply in twenty years.
  • It's approachable — a handful of keywords covers most everyday queries, and you can be productive within days.
  • It works alongside any language — Python, PHP, R, Java, and JavaScript applications all send SQL to their databases.

SQL has limits worth knowing: it isn't designed for building user interfaces or general application logic, and complex analyses often combine SQL (to fetch and summarize data) with a programming language (to model and visualize it).
