Setting Up Your Development Environment

You write Python code in a plain text file with a .py extension. A dedicated code editor makes this much easier than a plain text editor, mainly through syntax highlighting and error underlining.

Visual Studio Code (free) with its official Python extension is the most common beginner setup. Install the editor, install the "Python" extension from its marketplace, then open a folder to work in.

You do not need an "IDE" or any paid software to start.
